Žemaitija

This cross is distinguished by its splendid Baroque decoration: rays on the shaft and between the crosspieces surround the figure of the Crucified Christ, framed by slightly bent carved bows, embellished with floral motifs. A segmented star in the centre of the crosspiece takes the place of the Eye of Providence, and the motif is repeated on the planes of the bows in Christ’s hands (only one has survived). The cross is painted brown, and the planes are variegated with colourful brushstrokes. The bright colouring of the figure of the Crucified Christ and the decoration make the work look more complicated and magnificent.

The purpose of such adorned crucifixes was often for processions, or to hang in churches over the font. In rare cases, they could be found in people’s homes.
