The Virgin and Child

Author: Unknown artist
Created:19th century
Material:wood
Technique:carving, colour paint
Dimensions:100 cm

This sculpture was made in the 19th century, when religious sentimentality and idealistic spirituality were popular, but the artist followed the 18th-century tradition of Baroque sculpture. The slender and graceful figure of Mary is standing in a contrapposto position; her dignified posture is echoed by the delicate pose of Jesus. Both are crowned with royal crowns. The representation of the Infant as the Saviour of the World standing on a globe is rare in the Lithuanian context. Similar sculptures of the Blessed Virgin Mary are found in Germany.
