Jesus of Nazareth

This primitive sculpture by an unknown artist can be identified as an image of Jesus of Nazareth from its posture, the long gown, and the crown of thorns on the head. There is no rope tying his hands, as is typical of images of Jesus of Nazareth, nor a Trinitarian scapular. The artist was probably more concerned with giving a general picture of the scourged and mocked Christ, rather than with the meticulous carving of details. On the other hand, the sculpture has obviously been worn by time, and therefore small details, or details made of other materials such as rope or tin, could have been lost. Its flatness leads us to conclude that it was nailed to a roofed pillar-type cross in Aukštaitija, where it would have been mercilessly eroded by rain and snow.
