The First Station of the Cross "Jesus is condemned to death"

Author: Unknown artist
Created:second quarter of the 20th century
Material:wood
Technique:carving, woodstain
Dimensions:61 × 54 cm

In the second half of the 19th century, makers of religious sculptures in Western Europe began to make and reproduce the Stations of the Cross in gypsum and other forms of relief. The production of these started in Poland at the end of the century. The sculptural works made by Józef Szpetkowski’s firm in Warsaw and Poznań spread very quickly in Lithuania. In this relief, Szpetkowski’s composition for the First Station of the Cross was used. The relief is unsigned, but the modelling of the figures and other qualities allow us to attribute it to the school of the renowned Polish sculptor Henryk Kuna (ca 18791945), a representative of the new traditionalism, who between 1936 and 1939 was a professor at Stephen Bathory University in Vilnius.
