A conversation between bathers

Jonas Rimša was born on 12 June 1903 in Svėdasai. He attended gymnasiums in Kaunas and Kharkov. In 1924 and 1925, he learnt to be a tailor in Vienna, and also studied painting. He left for Paris in 1925, and a few years later he went to South America. From 1930 to 1933 he studied painting at the Buenos Aires Academy of Arts. He settled in Bolivia in 1936, and held his first personal exhibition there. Works of his were displayed at the Fourth Autumn Exhibition in 1938 in Kaunas. In 1943 and 1944 he headed the Academy of Arts in Sucre, Bolivia. In 1944, he opened a private art school in La Paso, which functioned until 1950. That year, for his service to culture, Rimša was declared a freeman of Bolivia, and was awarded the Order of the Condor of the Andes. After 1950, he held exhibitions in Argentina, Brazil, Peru and the USA. He visited Tahiti in 1966. He settled in Santa Monica near Los Angeles in 1969, and participated in exhibitions of Lithuanian art. The first exhibition of his bequeathed works in Lithuania was held in 1977.
He died on 13 May 1978 in Santa Monica. A posthumous exhibition of his work was held at the Lithuanian Art Museum in 2010.
