This Lithuanian-born artist who lived in South America often missed the northern winter, and went to Bariloche to paint snow. Here, the motif of Indian life is only necessary to inject some vitality. This landscape shows the influence of other genres, but remains a landscape, since for the artist the expression of the winter cold and the stagnation of nature through the harmony of cool colours was most important. He achieved this goal by choosing wide-ranging colours: bright cold blues alongside warm shades of brown, and red highlights.

San Carlos de Bariloche, or simply Bariloche, is a city in western Argentina in the foothills of the Andes. Rimša was drawn to the area’s natural beauty and the opportunity to fish on Lake Nahuel Huapi, but most of all, he appreciated its climate, which reminded him of Lithuania, with golden autumns and beautiful white winters. It would snow there during the colder months, unlike in Buenos Aires or Yungas. In his small-format painting Winter in Bariloche, Rimša evokes the harshness of the winter using deep blue and green hues, enlivened by the brightly coloured clothes of young people standing out against the snowy landscape. The striking contrasts of warm and cool tones, and the bold use of vivid colours, reveal the artist’s flair for decorative expression.
