This refreshing Expressionist landscape reflects the happiest years of Rimša’s professional and personal life. In the 1940s, the artist got engaged to the Bolivian poet and artist Yolanda Bedregal (19131999). Through their relationship, he was introduced to Bolivia’s cultural elite. Yolanda welcomed him into her circle of friends, which included prominent figures in the art world of the Andean countries, such as the Peruvian painter Alejandro González Trujillo-Apu Rimak, and the Bolivian sculptor Marina Núñez del Prado, a moderniser of South American sculpture. Yolanda’s parents, the lawyer Juan Francisco Bedregal, the rector of the University of San Andrés in La Paz, and his wife Carmen Iturri Alborta, accepted the Lithuanian artist into their family. Rimša lived with them and often stayed at their summer house in Yungas. One such idyllic moment is captured in this work. The lush nature, rich green tones, and the small cottage nestling amid the greenery convey powerfully the sense of peace and relaxation that the artist found in nature.
