Introversion

Author: Matas Menčinskas (1897–1942)
Created:1935-1941
Material:wood
Dimensions:67 × 31 cm

In 1934, after spending seven years in Argentina and Uruguay, Menčinskas returned to Lithuania and was welcomed as an internationally acclaimed artist, integrating into the country’s art scene. Introversion was created after he returned to live in Kaunas, where he continued to carve vivid and expressive sculptures, using local oak instead of quebracho wood. His international experience made a strong impression on the public, and significantly enhanced his artistic reputation. His works were exhibited regularly in towns across Lithuania, and also featured in comprehensive exhibitions of Lithuanian art held in Riga and Tallinn, thereby reaching broader audiences in the Baltic region. The artist’s reputation was further enhanced by stories of his South American experiences, which he shared with his students while teaching at the Kaunas Institute of Applied Arts and the Child Jesus Crafts School, stories that quickly spread throughout the city. Menčinskas’ appearance added to his romanticization: instead of a European-style hat, he would occasionally wear a sombrero.
