NIEMCEWICZ JULIAN URSYN, DZIEJE PANOWANIA ZYGMUNTA III, KRÓLA POLSKIEGO, WIELKIEGO KSIĘCIA LITEWSKIEGO ITD., WARSZAWA, 1819.

The three-volume historical work by Julian Ursyn Niemcewicz Dzieje panowania Zygmunta III, króla polskiego, wielkiego księcia litewskiego itd. (The History of the Rule of King of Poland and Grand Duke of Lithuania Sigismund III) came out in Warsaw in 1819 with this illustration in the first volume. The publication of the book was supported by various noblemen. The illustrations were produced in Vilnius in 1818 and 1819, engraved by the artists David Weiss and Gottlieb Kissling, who taught at the time in the Department of Graphic Art at Vilnius University, and the head of the department Michał Podoliński (17831856). In addition to the engraving published here, he also depicted a medal of Jan Zamoyski and a portrait of Leon Sapieha. The engraving Władysław Vasa as Grand Duke of Moscow contains some very rare historical details: a medal struck in 1610 to mark the election of Władysław Vasa as tsar of Moscow, and a coin issued by him with an
inscription in Cyrillic.
The book by Niemcewicz was republished in 1836 and 1860; however, most likely due to the requirements of the censors, these editions did not include the illustration Władysław Vasa as Grand Duke of Moscow.
