Chromolithograph after Vasily Sadovnikov, Jan Kazimierz Wilczyński, ‘Album of Vilnius’, series I, fascicle I, No. 7.

A chromolithograph based on Sadovnikov’s picture The Cathedral of St Stanislaus was made by the French lithographer Isidore Laurent Deroy (17971886). The depiction of the square is magnificent: hills with towers rise symmetrically behind the cathedral; to the left is the tower on Gediminas Hill; to the right is Bekešas Hill, with its monument, which had fallen down with the slope in 1841, six years before the making of the lithograph. The pages of Wilczyński’s book are distinguished by the style of French lithography, a particular way of expressing space, proportion and figures, which turned the Old Town of Vilnius into a spacious European city. A special charm is conveyed by the pictures of men, women and children, both poor and wealthy, and by horse drawn carriages.
