Kazimieras Žoromskis (1913–2004) lived in the United States from 1952, but his experience as a migrant had begun much earlier. Encouraged by Nikolai Vorobyov, a professor of art history at Vilnius Academy of Art, Žoromskis left Lithuania in 1943 to study in Vienna. After the war, he broadened his exposure to art by visiting famous collections in Rome and Madrid. Despite that, he did not settle permanently in Western Europe. Driven by curiosity and career opportunities, he moved to Colombia, where he was invited to teach at the Faculty of Art of the Pontificia Universidad Javeriana. He recalled how the university, one of the oldest in Colombia, was a prestigious institution educating the country’s upper class. However, the conservative artistic climate of Bogotá failed to satisfy his desire for a more dynamic cultural environment. Having received an invitation from his uncle Konstantas Žoromskis and obtained a visa, the artist emigrated to the United States. The painting TDS #182, part of his ‘Third Dimensional Series’ (1968–2001), comes from his American period. The work conveys the impression of seeing a glowing micro-world magnified through the blurred lens of a laboratory instrument, reflecting Žoromskis’ exploration of the role of colour in portraying light.
