Author: Abraham Ortelius (1527–1598)
Created:1603
Material:paper

Abraham Ortelius' monumental work Theatrum orbis terrarium is considered the first atlas ever published. It immediately achieved great success and in 1570, its four issues were published. In spite of its being the most expensive publication ever printed by that time, it was welcomed by the public with great enthusiasm, and thirty-one issues – at least 7300 copies – of the atlas were published from 1570 to 1612. Approximately 900 copies have survived to these days. Two hundred and twenty-eight various illustrations were used for the various issues of Theatrum.
