The Statute of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania (Statut Wielkiego Xięstwa Litewskiego)

‘The Statute of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania’ is the Third Statute of Lithuania, adopted in 1588. It was prepared by a committee of more than ten people, headed by Leo Sapieha (1557–1633), the Deputy Chancellor of Lithuania. This legal code remained in force in Lithuania after the collapse of the grand duchy, until 1840. The provisions of the Tribunal of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania approved by the Warsaw Sejm in 1581 are published along with the text of the Statute. This part has its own title page and separate pagination.

The Ellex Valiunas collection has seven editions of the Third Statute of Lithuania, published in Vilnius in 1619 (the Tribunal in 1616), in Warsaw in 1648, in Vilnius in 1693, 1744, 1786 and 1819, and in St Petersburg in 1810–1811.
