Prayer books entitled ‘The Little Golden Altar’ started to be published in the period of the press ban by Hartung’s printing press in Königsberg (ca 1870), and later by printing presses in Tilsit. Thirty-four editions of this prayer book are known, only one of which appeared in the USA rather than Prussia. The Ellex Valiunas collection has five copies of different editions of ‘The Little Golden Altar’.
Original artistic binding, decorated leather cover, gilding of the pages. A Christogram (JHS) of the supralibros type impressed in golden letters on the cover corresponds with the initials of Bishop Justinas Staugaitis (1866–1943), a signatory to the Act of Independence. The book is in excellent condition because it was held in a special slipcase.
