Works by Jonas Čeponis (19262003) are characterised by strong colour contrasts and sharp contours, usually black. The tulips and daffodils painted by the artist look as if they are made of plastic. He did not have metaphysical intentions, but just wanted to stylise the image, detaching it as far as possible from the naturalism of Socialist Realism. The drapery and the book make the composition look quite traditional, and provoke speculation about whether the work had another purpose as well as just developing professional skills. Details are few, but the walls and part of a window suggest the flat of a Soviet intellectual, with books, flowers, a round wooden table and curtains. The labels on the underframe on the back of the picture show that the work was selected for sale abroad; this is confirmed by the mark of an art saleroom in Moscow.
