Grand Duke Sigismund I of Lithuania (1432–1440) won an internal war in the battle of Pabaisk (1435), defeating the army of the Livonian Order and Švitrigaila, supported by the eastern part of GDL. Privileges of 1432 and 1434 to dukes and noblemen provided guarantees that they would not be punished without trial, equalised the rights of Catholic and Orthodox Christians, and exempted serfs from taxes and obligations to the state treasury. In 1440, Žygimantas Kęstutaitis was assassinated in Trakai by pro-slavic conspirators for his aspiration to be crowned.
