The baptism (16891696) and marriage (16911704) registers of Rokiškis Catholic parish church. Registers were books recording births, baptisms, marriages and deaths kept in parishes of the Catholic Church. The rules for keeping registers of baptisms and marriages were established in 1563 by the Council of Trent, the 19th Ecumenical Council of the Catholic Church. In Lithuania, registers were kept and held by the Catholic Church, and entries were made in Latin, Polish, Russian and Lithuanian, depending on the official language of the state at the time. For non-believers or people belonging to other religious groups, documents establishing their civil status were issued by the local authorities. The term ‘registers’ was used in everyday language and legal terminology until 1940.
