Reyßbuch deß heyligen Lands

The German translation of ‘Journey to Jerusalem’ by Mikołaj Krzysztof ‘The Orphan’ Radziwiłł (1549–1616) was published in Frankfurt in 1609. It is a famous combined work summing up all the trips to Jerusalem and Palestine known at the time. ‘The Orphan’ Radziwiłł travelled to Jerusalem with several companions, visiting Crete, Cyprus, Tripoli, Damascus and other places on the way, and reached his destination on 25 June 1583, where he spent two weeks. He visited holy sites related to the life of Jesus and the Blessed Virgin Mary. On 29 June, the Franciscans conferred the title of Knight of the Holy Sepulchre on all the travellers, and Radziwiłł gave a chalice to the monks and funds for the upkeep of the monastery. Later he went to Egypt, and finally, after having some adventures in Italy, he ended the trip in Poland in 1585. Radziwiłł’s memoir was translated into Latin, prepared for publishing and reworked in epistolary form by Tomasz Treter, the canon of Warmia. The book was first published in Braunsberg in 1601, and a second Latin edition came out in Antwerp in 1614. Polish editions appeared in Kraków in 1607 and 1628; German editions were published in 1603 and 1609; and in the 18th century the book went through several reprints in Polish and Latin, and was translated into Russian.
