Bolesław Balzukiewicz (1879–1935), who headed the Sculpture Studio at the Faculty of Art, showed Vilnius’ links with Poland in his compositions by using easily recognisable symbols. In a woodcut commemorating the victory over the Bolsheviks, he ingeniously incorporated the Polish heraldic eagle with Gediminas’ Tower, one of the most meaningful
images of Vilnius, forming a crown above the White Eagle.
