ROGALSKI LEON, DZIEJE KRZYŻAKÓW ORAZ ICH STOSUNKI Z POLSKĄ, LITWĄ I PRUSSAMI, WARSZAWA, 1846.

Owing to the fact that on 15 June 1410, King Jogaila of Poland led the joint Lithuanian and Polish army at the Battle of Grünwald, he is officially considered the victor in the battle. This is how Wincenty Smokowski (17971876) showed him in a lithograph. The artist did not depict a battle scene, but focused on the ruler as a mounted knight, with the faint silhouette of a standard-bearer to the right. The energetic, sure-footed horse, rearing with Jogaila sitting upright in the saddle, expresses the ruler’s courage, determination and self-control, and his command of the situation.
The lithograph was published in 1846 in Warsaw in the two-volume book by Leon Rogalski (18061878) Dzieje Krzyżaków oraz ich stosunki z Polską, Litwą i Prussami (The History of the Crusaders). Out of 12 illustrations in it, six were by Wincenty Smokowski (others showed Sigismund the Old with a diploma of peace, Jadwiga, giving up her jewels, Casimir Jagiellon, Konrad Wallenrod, and Kęstutis in prison).
The historian and translator Leon Rogalski was born and brought up in the Lithuanian capital. He was a patriot, writing prolifically on Lithuanian themes. He and Smokowski, who also paid much attention to themes from Lithuanian history, had probably already met in Vilnius, but the illustrations for the book on the Crusaders were made in Warsaw (Rogalski moved to Warsaw in 1835, and Smokowski lived there from 1841 to 1858).
