When Lithuania took back its historic capital, artists started creating works that included Lithuanian images in addition to Gediminas Hill, the cathedral and the Gates of Dawn. The entry of the Lithuanian army into the city received special attention. Photographs of this memorable event show crowds of people welcoming the Lithuanian troops, and all kinds of symbolic material were published to mark it. Vladas Norkus (1909–1976) designed a certificate for those who entered Vilnius with the army, showing Gediminas and his castle, together with photographs of the Lithuanian army entering the city. The arrival of the troops was called ‘a military expedition’, a rather exaggerated word, chosen to draw historical parallels with Medieval Lithuania.
