The prayer book ‘The Old Golden Altar, or a Collection of Various Prayers and Songs for a Devout Catholic’ in the Lithuanian language in Russian letters (called a grazhdanka) reflects the ban on printing in Lithuanian letters. When the press in Latin characters was banned after the uprising of 1863, the authorities tried to associate Lithuania with Russian culture through the Russian alphabet, and thus gradually assimilate the country. By 1904, 58 Lithuanian books had been published in Cyrillic. People declined to use books in Russian lettering, and Bishop Motiejus Valančius urged their avoidance. Books published in grazhdanka script would be distributed in schools.
