Antoni Czerniewski (16871732), a professor at the Vilnius Academy, is known as the author of sermons and school dramas. In 1724 he published the collection of sermons ‘Jonathan’s Arrows: Words of God’ dedicated to Aleksander Paweł Sapieha, the Marshal of Lithuania. The sermons (although macaronic) are emotional, full of references to the Bible and ancient history, and rich in comparisons and symbols. It is obvious that they were addressed to educated readers, even though they mix Latin with the vernacular.

An illustration on the verso of the title page depicts an arrow with a double cross, the coat of arms of the Sapieha family, the Lis (Fox). The same coat of arms was used by the Swirski, Narbutt, Zabiełło and many other noble families. The first holder of this coat of arms was Jonas Sungaila, the Castellan of Trakai, who received it from the Polish magnates according to the terms of the 1413 Union of Horodło.
