Auszra was the first national Lithuanian newspaper, published first in Ragnit and later in Tilsit between 1883 and 1886 and meant for Greater Lithuania. It aimed to rally Lithuanians and raise their national selfawareness, and carried many articles devoted to the origins and history of the Lithuanians and the Balts, and also to the national revivals of other peoples. It also published some works of Lithuanian and foreign fiction. Auszra contributed to the formation of the standard Lithuanian language on the basis of the west Aukštaitian (Suvalkian) dialect.

The first page of the set of Auszra from 1885 bears the stamp of the Lithuanian Scientific Society, and another page at the front gives a list of the contents in Jonas Basanavičius’ handwriting: ‘Contents Auszra 1884’. Basanavičius was the first editor of the newspaper, and a founder of the Lithuanian Scientific Society.
