The prayer book ‘The Golden Altar, or the Source of Heavenly Treasures’, prepared by Serafinas Laurynas Kušeliauskas (18201889), contained the texts of almost all Lithuanian prayers known at that time. It was based on prayer books that had appeared before the press ban, and included some prayers that Kušeliauskas had written himself. ‘The Golden Altar’ was well suited to people’s devotional needs: it was the most popular prayer book during the press ban and was reprinted 90 times. The Ellex Valiunas collection has three copies of it from the period before the press ban, and 27 falsely attributed copies in various versions, in various sizes and with various titles.
