Author: Vladas Didžiokas (1889–1942)

V. Didžiokas was a painter, scenographer, graphic artist and teacher. He was born on 1 September 1889 in Vilnius. He attended drawing school in Vilnius and in 1910–1916 he studied fine arts classes at the A. Stieglitz School of Art in St. Petersburg. In 1917 he entered the Academy of Art in St. Petersburg on audit and took lessons from D. Kardovski. In the autumn of 1918, after having worked as a scenographer in Vitebsk, he returned to Vilnius and from 1919 he was engaged in creating stage settings for performances in Lithuanian theatres. From 1921 he lived in Kaunas. During 1922–1923 V. Didžiokas studied scenography in Germany. In 1922 and 1931–1940 he lectured at the Kaunas School of Art and headed a fine arts studio. He painted landscapes, portraits and tried his hand as a graphic artist. He created stage settings for operas and dramas at the State Theatre (Ch. Guno Faust; G. Bizet Carmen; F. Schiller The Robbers, etc.). In 1936 he took up residence in Dovainonys near Rumšiškės and abandoned his artistic life. He died in 1942 in Kaunas.
