Vilnius. Topophilia (Volume I) I 2014

Art album Vilnius. Topophilia (Volume I)
Compiled by L. Laučkaitė. Vilnius, LAWIN, 2014

The Greek word topophilia means ‘love of place’. This book looks at works of art on the theme of Vilnius, made by artists who loved and admired the city. In chronological terms, the book presents images of Vilnius from the 19thand 20th centuries. The city was depicted both by local painters who knew it well, and by visitors who managed to find undiscovered corners. The book enables us to tour the city with the artists, to admire it from hilltops, streets, and the windows of the artists’ homes. Today’s residents will have no difficulty recognising many parts of the city; but the book also shows some enigmatic views, inviting us to guess where the view was seen from, and then finding the answer in the commentary next to the picture.
