The Exhibition "Lithuania in Maps" in Brussels

Opening of the exhibition "Lithuania in Maps" from the collection of the law firm "Valiunas Ellex", in the Permanent representation of Lithuania to the European Union, on 22th October.

The exposition presents salient original maps of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and its neighbouring states in the 16th18th centuries printed in the Netherlands. Commemorating the 250th birth anniversary of Michał Kleofas Ogiński, a politician, composer and public figure, such choice was prompted by the fact that Ogiński was a diplomat, in 1790 appointed Special Envoy of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth to Holland. It is not by chance that the most significant map of the GDL, printed in Amsterdam at the order of Michael Radvila ("the Orphan"), the Palatine of Vilnius and Trakai, and issued with his efforts, takes the central place in the exhibition. It is the first Lithuanian map drawn based on topographic measurements. The subsequent revised and remade versions of this map will undoubtedly draw visitors’ attention as well as the unique maps drawn by the eminent West European cartographers and publishers, such as Gerardus Mercator, Abraham Ortelius, Renier and Joshua Ottens, Johannes Janssonius, Frederik de Wit, Joan Blaeu, Carel Allard and others.

The exhibition presents samples of ancient cartography from the collection of the law firm "Valiunas Ellex". The collection is one of the largest art collections in Lithuania comprising valuable paintings, sculptures, old maps, historical graphic art, old Lithuanian books and collections of rear prints. The touchstone of the collection is the link of the exhibits with Lithuania.

"Valiunas Ellex" isa member of "Ellex", a circle of leading Baltic law firms, which provides highest quality legal services and currently has more than 100 lawyers in its Vilnius office. The firm is a privileged member in Lithuania of Lex Mundi, the world’s leading network of more than 100 best law firms, and an exclusive member of the World Services Group (WSG), a global membership network whose members are among the top providers of professional business services.
