Stage Divas at Pranas Domšaitis gallery
"During interwar the portraits of female artists painted reveal not only the features of the portrait genre, the mastery of the authors of these works and their creative pursuits, but also the characters of Lithuanian female artists, the public's attitude towards the female artist and the status of the artist, the valid canons of beauty, says the director of the Pranas Domšaitis gallery Skaistė Marčienė, - every artist has a special story that testifies to her will, visions and courage. In the exhibition, it is also interesting to compare how one or another male creator presents a female artist, what strikes as important to them."
Performers are often depicted embodying their most famous roles, so the exhibition can even see several portraits of Carmen - the two most impressive are the symbolic duel not only of the artists Vladas Didžiokas and Petros Kalpokas, but also of M. Rakauskaitė and O. Dubeneckienė-Kalpokienė, who created this role. Visitors to the exhibition will also instantly recognize R. Staliliūnaitė, whom the portrait master Vytautas Ciplijauskas depicted as Barbora Radvilaitė.
A separate series of portraits is dedicated to theater and film star Unė Babickaitė (Bay). The actress with a tragic fate, who received Hollywood recognition, was painted by well-known painters Kazys Šimonis, Adomas Varnas, Vytautas Kašuba and Armenian artist Sarkis Katchadourianas, who is little known in Lithuania.
The exhibition also exhibits rare portraits in which individuals are depicted at all heights. "Stage Divas" has a whole row of them: images of ballerina Olga Malėjinaitė (artist Jonas Janulis), drama theater legends Ona Rymaitė (artist Jonas Janulis), Elena Žalinkevičaitė (artist Neemija Arbit Blatas) and the already mentioned R. Staliliūnaitė.
