Exhibition "Vilnius. Topophilia"

On 8 March 2017, on the occasion of the Lithuanian Independence Day, the Embassy of Lithuania in cooperation with the law firm Ellex Valiunas will open an art exhibition „Vilnius. Topophilia“.

This exhibition presents works from the art collection of the law firm Ellex Valiunas, which is one of the largest private art collections in Lithuania comprising selections of valuable old maps, historical graphics, books, arms and other works of art. The main criterion of the collection is the link of exhibits with Lithuania. An important part of the art collection, ‘Vilnius. Topophilia’, presents pictures on the theme of Vilnius. The Greek word topophilia means ‘love of place’; this word precisely reflects the attitude of artists towards the city which they depicted. Artists of the 19th–20th centuries were charmed by the well preserved old town, profound greenery, the location of the city among the hills from which marvellous views of the city opened up before onlookers. Steeples and bell towers of churches – samples of Vilnius Baroque architecture – gracefully rise above the city. Historically, Vilnius was a multinational and multicultural city, which inspired Lithuanian, Polish, Jewish and Russian artists. The exhibition presents works of famous 20th century painters Józef Bałzukiewicz, Franciszek Jurjewicz, Viktoras Vizgirda, Vytautas Mackevičius, Raphael Chwoles and other artists who produced poetical and vivacious images of Vilnius.

Opening of the exhibition will take place on 8 March 2017 at 7.30 pm at the Embassy of Lithuania, 2 Bessborough Gardens, London SW1V 2JE.

The exhibition will be open until 20 August 2017.

Organisers: the Embassy of the Republic of Lithuania in the United Kingdom and law firm Ellex Valiunas
