Exhibition devoted to the artist Jonas Vaitys

Two exhibitions “Jonas Vaitys – 110” and “Leonardas Vaitys. Architecture: facts on creation” will be displayed in the Picture Gallery in Kaunas. The exhibitions will be open from 28 February to 20 April 2014.

Jonas Vaitys (1903-1963) is a Lithuanian art classic of the twentieth century. His art, however, is still poorly activated in our artistic memory. During the interwar period the artist stood out as a painter of social themes: he has developed a unique "gallery of poverty images“, created distinguishing paintings with the views of the Kaunas Brazilka and ironic scenes disclosing the so called outstanding society. J. Vaitys is well known for the variety of stylistic explorations. After the war, in the Soviet years, he became known as a landscape painter - an observer of drowsy and awakening nature, a great master in rendering wonderful instants of melting snow.

The exhibition will contain several works from the collection of the Lithuanian Art Foundation (VŠĮ Lietuvos dailės fondas): Autumn in Pajiesis, 1944, Autumn in an oak wood, 1952, Approaching spring, 1954, and The Kaunas Sea, 1962.
