Cz. Znamierowski painted this winter landscape when he still lived in Latvia. At that time he was a graduate of the St Petersburg Academy of Art and a member of the Latvian Artists’ Society, and an active participant in its exhibitions. In the clear rhythmical composition of the picture, the artist admires the graphic contrast of white and black, typical to winter. The patches of melted snow on the snow-clad roofs and on the ground mimic the pattern of birches in the foreground.
