‘A History of the City of Vilnius’ by Józef Ignacy Kraszewski (1812–1887), published in 1840–1842, is based on rich archival material, chronicles and annals. The history of the city is described from the founding of the city to 1750. Kraszewski used all the published and manuscript information on Vilnius that was available. The work took him ten years: he copied material he found in the city’s archives, decrees of the burgomaster and the wojt, the Lithuanian Metrika, memoirs, manuscripts from Vilnius University Library, and documents from monasteries and private libraries. Coming out in 1838, the first edition was banned by the tsar’s censors, so copies of this edition are bibliographical rarities.
