The objects in the pictures by Kostas Dereškevičius (b. 1937) sometimes tell us more than the people. If there are no humans in the picture, then a landscape with elements of a still-life helps to convey the meaning. In this case, the composition includes a landscape, part of a woman’s figure, and objects, or rather waste, piled up in the foreground. The pile of waste leaves us in no doubt that the picture was painted in the 1970s, when machinery was just like that in the picture, and innovative artists portrayed it as it was. The combination of objects and the presupposed landscape behind the fence denotes a dismal suburban routine.
