The painter Vincas Norkus (19252006) graduated from the State Institute of Art of the LSSR in the early 1950s, and for many years he taught at the Art Institute and in the Salomėja Nėris Secondary School. Landscape was his main theme, and he painted many emotional landscapes of Lithuania. He had a studio in the Old Town, and knew well the secluded corners of Vilnius. He was also enchanted by the view in spring from the staircase in Užupis: the sunlit Old Town is painted in fresh colours and broad brushstrokes. Shimmering water emerges through young, still yellow leaves, and churches line up against the background of an ultramarine sky: the churches of St Casimir, Sts Johns, St Michael, and even the bell tower of the cathedral. This view does not actually exist, as the churches are further apart, but the painter put them together on the canvas, thus filling the picture with familiar architectural icons of the city.
