From the very beginning of his creative life, M. Dobuzhinsky took keen interest in the past, history, and the extant imprints of ancient culture. At the beginning of the 20th century, he created a cycle of twenty-four Vilnius cityscapes (19061914) and a number of Russian townscapes. Being an educated expert of architecture, he perfectly rendered – both in style and spirit – the urban architecture. This picture makes the charm of Russian wooden architecture meaningful, and particularly vivid against the white stone structures, as if rendering a dialogue between the old and the new.
