Bronius Uogintas Jr (19462013), a painter and restorer of murals, knew the Old Town of Vilnius very well, and liked to paint it. In one of his pictures he portrayed Šv Ignoto Street, which in Soviet times was named Giedrio Street, after the revolutionary Kazys Giedrys. The composition is polynomial: there is a detail of St Ignatius’ Church to the left, a little further is the building of the Jesuit novitiate with its open arcades, and the narrow winding street is crowned by the dome of the Dominican Church. Uogintas admired the views of Paris painted by Maurice Utrillo in the early 20th century, which were scenic, and sensitive in their colouring and their contours, and painted in a slightly naive style, ignoring the rules of perspective. The Vilnius townscapes by Uogintas were painted under his influence. In this picture of Šv Ignoto Street, natural shapes are simplified, the contoured drawing is rigid, and the perspective is slightly imprecise, as the artist focused on the scenic rhythm of the planes, the drama of the colourful architecture, and the dark and restless sky.
