Flowers

When Leonas Katinas (1907–1984) was painting this still-life of flowers from country gardens, including delphiniums, rudbeckias, Jerusalem crosses and sparganiums, he must have visualised the work of the Impressionists. The light and clear colouring and the short multi-colour brushstrokes, which produce a pleasant optical mix of colours thrilling the whole surface of the canvas, remind us of Impressionist paintings. Perhaps the leisurely mood and the summer heat helped the painter to make a mental journey to sunny France. On the back of the picture, there is an inscription by the artist himself: 1956 VII 5 Vilkijoj, which shows that the picture was painted beside the River Nemunas on a summer’s day.
