Older artists did not introduce any particular stylistic innovations during the 1920s and 1930s. The trend for Realism, with some touches of early Modernism, prevailed in painting. Features of Impressionism can be seen in the work of Petras Kalpokas (18801945), and in some of the lyrical landscapes by Antanas Žmuidzinavičius (18761966). Adomas Varnas (18791979) painted a portrait of Jonas Basanavičius, the patriarch of the nation, in a Post-Impressionist style. The style of Cezanne is revealed most clearly in the work of Justinas Vienožinskis (18861960). Older-generation painters produced mostly portraits and landscapes. These tendencies in style and genre were the core of the curriculum at Kaunas Art School, and prevailed in exhibitions until the 1930s.
