This is the fourth artist’s book (livre d’artiste) by Pranas Gailius (b. 1928), a graphic artist who lives in Paris (the first was Livre premier de la suite lithuanienne, published in 1968). He was inspired to write it by the poems about wine, women and roses by the medieval Persian poet Omar Khayyam, which was translated into French by Gerard Willemetz. The prints took two years to finish. It consists of 20 pages composed of parts of a female figure, and a calligraphic text on a white background. The paper is handmade. It shows a skilful application of Gailius’ favourite congreve technique.
