At the age of 23, Count Eustachy Tyszkiewicz (18141873) excavated 11 tumuli on his land near Lahoysk, and unearthed human skeletons with rich grave goods. Five years after his first successful excavations, he published the book ‘A Glimpse of the Country’s Archaeological Sources’, which became the first book on the subject in Lithuania. The historian Teodor Narbutt started his review in the magazine Tygodnik Petersburski with the prophetic words: ‘These are the beginnings of a museum of regional lore.’ Tyszkiewicz’s archaeology collection became the basis for the Vilnius Museum of Antiquities, founded in 1855. Archaeology was his great passion, and he is considered the founder of archaeology in Lithuania.
