This work is characteristic of the last decade of the painter’s life, when he departed from portraying realistic imagery, and improvised freely with colour. By using rhythm, structures of sharp angular shapes, and the emotional impact of colouring, he created a resonance of red, conveying the impression of a scream, which seems to pierce the familiar silence of the night and the peacefulness of the stiff shapes. This picture stands out sharply from the artist’s other pictures by its abstract and decorative style of painting, and by its contrasting moods.
