Author: Józef Pieniążek (1888–1953)

Józef Pieniążek (1888–1953), a painter and graphic artist from Lviv, studied at Cracow Academy of Art under the famous graphic artist Władysław Skoczylas and the painter Leon Wyczółkowski. From 1925, inspired by Wyczółkowski, he depicted the disappearing traditional national culture, such as costumes and old architecture, and churches and chapels in landscapes. During the interwar period, he was a member of the Czartak literary and artistic group, which promoted religious mysticism and a love of nature. He showed his work in exhibitions in Cracow, Warsaw and other cities. From 1945, he lived in Cracow. Pieniążek was recognised for his portfolios of etchings of landscapes and urban architecture.
