The port of Klaipėda

Author: Pranciškus Porutis (1924–2009)

Pranciškus Porutis was a painter and museologist. He was born on 4 June 1924 in Šiauliai. Between 1941 and 1956, he was exiled with his parents to the Altai area in Yakutia. He completed his painting studies at Yakutsk Higher School of Art in 1950, and until 1956 he worked as a teacher at a secondary school in Mukhtuy. Returning to Lithuania, he worked as a teacher at a secondary school in Raseiniai. He was a researcher in the Graphic Art Division of the M.K. Čiurlionis Art Museum in Kaunas between 1964 and 1985. He organised and opened the A. Žmuidzinavičius Memorial Museum, and in 1966 he arranged the first exhibition in the Devil Museum.
Porutis joined the Lithuanian Artists’ Association in 1961, and held solo exhibitions in Kaunas (1970, 1973, 1984, 2004), Vilnius (1973, 2004) and Klaipėda (2005). A posthumous exhibition of his work was held in 2010. He participated in exhibitions of work by Lithuanian artists abroad (in Hungary, France, Great Britain, Brazil). Coastal motifs prevail in his pictures: he painted landscapes and still lifes, and was a skilled watercolourist. He participated in exhibitions of Baltic watercolour art in Riga. Features of realistic and Expressionist styles intertwine in his oeuvre, the compositions are constructive and rhythmical, with rich and dark colours prevailing, the brushstrokes are expressive, and the shapes are stylised.
He died on 25 October 2009 in Kaunas. The Lithuanian Art Museum, the M.K. Čiurlionis National Art Museum and the Aušra Museum in Šiauliai have some of his works in their collections.
