The painter Raimondas Martinėnas was born in Šiauliai on 18 October 1947. He attended a four-year art school in Vilnius between 1961 and 1965, and studied painting at the State Art Institute of Lithuania from 1965 to 1971. He began to work as a teacher at the National M.K. Čiurlionis School of Arts in 1995. In 1997 he obtained a bachelor’s degree, and in 1973 he began to participate in exhibitions. He has been a member of the Lithuanian Artists’ Association since 1978. He was chairman of the Young Artists’ Association between 1978 and 1981, and from 1996 a member of Group 24.
Martinėnas has participated in painting triennials in Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania (1978, 1996, 2004), and in group exhibitions of Group 24 in Lithuania and abroad (including Frankfurt, London, Paris, Riga and Stockholm). He has held about 12 solo exhibitions. In 1996 he won the main prize in the Baltic States Painting Triennial in Vilnius. His works have been acquired by the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Lithuania, the Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow, modern art galleries in Moscow, the Norton George Gallery in New York, and various institutions and private collectors in Lithuania, Germany, France, Israel, Austria and the USA.
