Author: | Dalia Kasčiūnaitė (b.1947) |
Dalia Kasčiūnaitė paints in oils and watercolours, and creates graphic works and carpet designs. She was born on 17 April 1947 in Vilnius. Between 1967 and 1972 she studied painting at the State Art Institute of Lithuania. After a year, she began to participate in exhibitions in Lithuania (the Vilnius Painting Triennial, 1978, 1981, 1987) and abroad (Hamburg and Hanover, 1990; Oldenburg and Cologne, 1991; Chicago, 1993; Paris, 1990, 1993; St Petersburg, 1997; Dusseldorf, 1997, 1998). She has held solo exhibitions in Lithuania (mostly in Vilnius), Germany, Chicago, Paris and Moscow. She was a member of Art Group 1, and participated in its exhibitions (1992, 1993, 1995, 1997). Works by Kasčiūnaitė are held by the Government of the Republic of Lithuania, Santariškės Hospital in Vilnius, and the Kaunas branch of Vilniaus Bankas. Her works have been acquired by the Lithuanian Art Museum, the M.K. Čiurlionis National Art Museum, and the State Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow.
In her art, Kasčiūnaitė has passed through several stages of development: from metaphorical realism to the spontaneous abstraction of lyrical nature, the source of which lies in organic abstractionism. She expresses her feelings through colour, with free brushstrokes, and by filling the colouring with subtle shades. Over the last decade, she has become more inclined towards monochromatic works: she has created red, blue and grey pictures. There are archetypal signs in her compositions, in her drawings of plants, in the silhouettes of various shapes and the textual inscriptions, as if they bring pulsating life into the tranquil space of the picture.
