Abstraction

Author: Rimvidas Jankauskas–Kampas (1957–1993)

Rimvidas Jankauskas-Kampas was one of the most important Lithuanian painters of the 20th century. He worked for only six years, but left a clear mark on Lithuanian art. He was born on 7 December 1957 in Klaipėda. Between 1981 and 1987 he studied painting at the State Art Institute of Lithuania, and lectured there from 1989. He had solo exhibitions at Kaunas Picture Gallery (1988, 1991, 1993), in Frankfurt am Main (1993), and at the Contemporary Art Centre in Vilnius (1994), and participated in eight important group exhibitions in Lithuania and abroad.  He died on 7 October 1993 in Klaipėda.
Jankauskas-Kampas was a member of the Angis modern art group. According to his style and manner of expression, his oeuvre may be attributed to Abstract Expressionism. His work is carefree and roughly impulsive. His sense of daring erupts quite naturally, and flows and pulsates in the brushstrokes and the colours. The light, colourful brushstrokes play an important part: they form the narrative, the spirit and the rhythm, thus marking out Jankauskas-Kampas in the context of colourist painting in Lithuania. The contrasting colours and their dynamics are the most important means creating the general atmosphere.
