Author: Antanas Žmuidzinavičius (1876–1966)

Antanas Žmuidzinavičius, a painter and teacher, was the People’s Artist of the Soviet Socialist Republic of Lithuania (1957) and member-correspondent of the Art Academy of the USSR (1958). He was born on 31 October 1876 in Seirijai (Lazdijai district). He finished the Teachers’ Seminary in Veiveriai in 1894 and left for Poland, Lomzha district, to work as a teacher. In 1898 he resettled in Warsaw and worked as a teacher. He attended J. Zolotoriov’s evening school of drawing and W. Gerson’s painting studio (1899). He studied drawing in Paris at the private Colarossi Academy, and painted at H. Anglada’s studio and Viti Academy (1905–1906). In 1906 he returned to Vilnius where he organised the first Lithuanian art exhibitions and headed the Lithuanian Art Society. In 1908–1909 he travelled and visited Paris, Geneva, Florence and Rome. He also lived in Munich and the USA. In 1914 he and Tadas Ivanauskas travelled along the coast of the Atlantic Ocean. During the years of the First World War (1915–1919) he taught at the Lithuanian Gymnasium in Vilnius. In 1922–1924 he travelled to the USA and held personal exhibitions: in Washington (1923), New York and Chicago (1924). In 1924 he came back to his homeland and taught drawing at the Kaunas School of Art (1926–1940). In 1925–1940 he painted mostly landscapes and organised a number of personal exhibitions: in Kaunas (1927, 1936 and 1940), Panevėžys (1927, jointly with J. Zikaras), and in Alytus (1938). Between 1945 and 1951 he was a lecturer and professor (1947) at the Kaunas State Institute of Applied and Fine Arts and at the Kaunas Polytechnic Institute (1951–1957). He died on 9 August 1966 in Kaunas.
