Antanas Rūkštelė, a painter, art historian and ethnographer, was born in 1906 in Degučiai, Zarasai County. In 1929 he finished graphics studio at the Kaunas School of Art. Later he took private lessons in painting from P. Kalpokas and J. Mackevičius. In 1932–1939 he studied history and philosophy at the Kaunas Vytautas Magnus University. In 1926–1936 he worked as a conservationist of exhibits at the M. K. Čiurlionis Gallery and the State Museum. He began to participate in exhibitions in 1932. He was able to discern the motifs of the Lithuanian spirit in nature. He is the author of the book Lietuvių tautodailė (Lithuanian Folk Art) (1929). At the end of the war he retreated to the West and after six years of creative work in Australia, in 1955, he arrived to the USA, where he died in 1990 in St. Petersburg (Florida).
