Author: Stanisław Jarocki (1872–1944)

Stanislaw Jarocki was a painter, teacher, ethnographer and public figure. He was born in 1872 in Warsaw. He attended Drawing Class under W. Gerson’s supervision. In 1891–1894 he studied at the Cracow Academy of Art under J. Matejko, J. Unierzyski and L. Löffler. In 1896–1898 he continued his studies at the Colarossi Academy in Paris under R. Collin, L. Merson, E. Aman-Jean, and later in Munich under S. Hóllosy, and in Rome. In 1898 he settled in Vilnius and taught painting at the Vilnius School of Drawing and in his organised Self-education group. He was a member of the Vilnius Art and Vilnius Ethnographers’ Societies. He wrote a guidebook on ethnography Vilniaus apylinkės (Environs of Vilnius) (1925), some articles about folk art and about the Vilnius district. He displayed his works in exhibitions in Vilnius, Warsaw, Lvov, Zakopane, Rome and Venice. He died on 13 October in 1944 in Vilnius.
